Model the Behavior You Expect From Your Team

As a leader, setting the tone for your team is important. You want to show your team what’s expected of them but also lead by example. This means modeling the behavior you want to see from your team.

Show Empathy

One of the most important things you can do as a leader is to show empathy. This means putting yourself in your team member’s shoes and understanding their perspective. When you show empathy, you build trust and understanding with your team. This leads to better communication and collaboration and, ultimately, better results.

Remain Open-Minded

As a leader, it’s important to remain open-minded. You want to consider alternatives before shutting down ideas or dismissing them. Instead, you should be open to new ideas and perspectives. This means listening to your team members’ ideas and considering them thoughtfully. When you remain open-minded, you create an environment where your team feels comfortable sharing their ideas and taking risks.

Consider Alternative Ideas

In addition to remaining open-minded, it’s important to consider alternative ideas. This means looking beyond the status quo and considering new approaches and solutions. When you consider alternative ideas, you encourage your team to think outside the box and come up with creative solutions to problems.

Avoid Taking Sides

When conflicts arise, it’s important to avoid taking sides. Instead, you want to facilitate a resolution by guiding the conversation towards finding common ground and identifying possible solutions. When you avoid taking sides, you create an environment where healthy debate is encouraged, and conflicts are seen as opportunities for growth and innovation.

Conclusion

As a leader, you have a responsibility to model the behavior you expect from your team. You want to show empathy, remain open-minded, and consider alternative ideas. You also want to avoid taking sides and instead facilitate a resolution when conflicts arise. When you model these behaviors, you create an environment where your team feels comfortable sharing their ideas and taking risks.

So, as you lead your team, remember to model the behavior you expect from them.
