As someone who has been on a healthcare journey for years, I have always believed that the title of CEO was the ultimate goal. But as I continue to strive for more, I am beginning to realize that there are titles and functions greater than CEO.
For example, in a small hospital, the CEO may be responsible for the hospital’s operations, but that individual may report to a regional VP or corporate leader. So, is the CEO really the gold standard?
My goal is to become the CEO of a large health system with at least 30 hospitals within 10 states. However, I refuse to limit my scope. I see myself running an international organization with over 1.5 million employees.
Looking Beyond the Title
When it comes to healthcare leadership, many positions play a crucial role in the success of an organization. The title of CEO may hold prestige, but other roles can make a significant impact.
For example, a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is responsible for an organization’s medical policies, procedures, and programs. A Chief Operating Officer (COO) manages the organization’s day-to-day operations and is responsible for ensuring that the organization runs efficiently and effectively. These roles are just as important as the CEOs and require different skills and expertise.
Breaking Down Silos
In healthcare, many silos exist between departments and specialties. Breaking down these silos requires strong leadership and collaboration between different teams. This is where titles such as Chief Integration Officer (CIO) and Chief Collaboration Officer (CCO) come into play. These individuals are responsible for ensuring that the organization is working together as a cohesive unit.
The Importance of Culture
No matter the title, an organization’s culture is vital to its success. A Chief Culture Officer (CCO) plays a crucial role in shaping an organization’s culture and ensuring that it aligns with its goals and values.
