As a business professor, full-time change agent, and business owner, lessons from sports can translate into the business world. I believe Sports coaches’ leadership styles can be adapted to build successful teams in business. While I rarely have the time to catch up on the big game, I’ve read my fair share of strategies and insights from great coaches. One of my favorites is Phil Jackson. He provided great leadership and helped both the Bulls and Lakers win multiple championships. However, it was not just about having world-class athletes. There was more to the story than that. He preached discipline, grit, and resilience.
Using Phil Jackson as an example, let’s explore the lessons that sports coaches can teach us about building a successful team.
Lead with a clear vision
Just like Phil Jackson had a clear vision for his teams, successful business leaders must have a clear vision for their teams. This vision should be communicated clearly to team members and should be at the forefront of any decision-making process. Without a clear vision, team members may become confused or disengaged, ultimately leading to failure. A clear vision creates direction and focus, which are essential for team success.
Create a culture of discipline
Phil Jackson was known for his strict coaching style, and it paid off in the form of championships. Business leaders can learn from this by creating a culture of discipline within their teams. This means setting clear expectations, providing feedback, and holding team members accountable. Without discipline, a team can easily become disorganized and lose focus. By establishing a culture of discipline, team members will understand what is expected of them and will be more likely to work together toward achieving shared goals.
Encourage resilience
Sports coaches know that setbacks are unavoidable. Phil Jackson encouraged his players to bounce back from losses and use them as motivation to improve. Business leaders can apply this lesson by promoting resilience within their teams. When mistakes happen, use them as learning opportunities and encourage team members to keep pushing forward.
