Therefore, it is important for leaders to understand their role in shaping organizational culture.
Leadership Theories
Leadership theories attempt to explain what leaders do by examining the behaviors, styles, and traits that differentiate leaders from followers. The great man theory, trait theory, behavioral theory, and the situational theory are some of the most popular theories in organizational leadership (Malos, 2012; Northouse, 2013).
Great Man Theory
The great man theory suggests that leaders are born with certain characteristics and abilities that make them different from followers and enable them to be great leaders. This theory also acknowledges the role of circumstances in the emergence of great leaders. The great man theory attempts to identify the traits of great leaders explaining that those leaders have special abilities that make them different from their followers.
Trait Theory
The trait theory suggests that great leaders possess specific traits that make them effective leaders. Although this theory lacks observable data due to the subjectivity of what contributes to the success of a great leader, the study of leadership traits has interested researchers because traits can be observed in all types of leaders to determine what makes them different.
Behavioral Theory
Leadership behaviors became a studied interest while the time traits theories interest declined because leadership traits did not explain how to apply traits to individuals who wanted to learn how to become effective leaders. The behavioral theory emphasizes the actions and behaviors of leaders and how they impact the effectiveness of their leadership.
Organizational Leadership
There are two classes of leaders within the organizational structure: informal leaders and formal leaders. Informal leaders are either self-appointed leaders or have a following of other employees that are not based on their position within the organization. Formal leaders hold positions within the organization that identify them as leaders. Leadership can be viewed as a process or relationship, abilities or personal traits, or behaviors.
Organizational Culture
Organizational culture is shaped by the values, beliefs, and practices of its members. Leaders play a critical role in shaping the culture of an organization. Leaders who understand the impact of their actions on organizational culture can be more effective in shaping that culture to align with the goals of the organization.
