As an adjunct professor teaching internationally, and an organizational leader, I have found myself uniquely juggling multiple roles, including being an entrepreneur. Growing up with successful entrepreneur parents, I learned the importance of taking risks and making businesses work.
Now, I find myself in a similar situation as I build my own business while maintaining a full-time job and teaching part-time. Despite the challenges, I thrive on the pressure of doing more and have learned valuable lessons along the way.
Starting a business while working a full-time job and teaching has its share of hurdles, but with careful planning and determination, it is possible to strike a balance. Here are some key lessons I have learned:
- Time management is essential: When juggling multiple roles, time management becomes critical. For me, it is important to prioritize tasks, set clear goals, and create a schedule that allows me to allocate time for my business, job, teaching responsibilities, and family Planning ahead and setting realistic deadlines can help you stay organized and focused.
- Build a reliable support system: Surrounding yourself with a reliable support system is crucial. This can include hiring competent staff for your business, delegating responsibilities, and seeking help from colleagues or mentors. A support system can alleviate some of the burden and enable you to focus on important aspects of your business and career.
- Capitalize on your expertise: As an adjunct professor specializing in healthcare measurement and quality improvement, I have leveraged my expertise to develop my business. By offering services that align with my professional knowledge and skills, I have created a niche market and attracted clients who value my expertise. Identifying and leveraging your unique strengths can give you a competitive advantage in your entrepreneurial endeavors.
- Embrace continuous learning: Entrepreneurship requires continuous learning and improvement. As an adjunct professor, I constantly update my knowledge to stay relevant. This has also helped me in my business, as I can offer cutting-edge solutions to my clients. Embracing a growth mindset and staying updated with industry trends have been key to my entrepreneurial and academic career success.
- Seek work-life balance: Balancing multiple roles can easily lead to burnout if you do not prioritize self-care and work-life balance. Setting boundaries and making time for personal well-being, hobbies, and relationships is important. Remember that caring for yourself is crucial for maintaining productivity and creativity in your business and career.
Being an entrepreneur while working a full-time job and teaching can be challenging, but it is possible to succeed with careful planning, effective time management, leveraging your expertise, continuous learning, and prioritizing work-life balance. It may not be easy, but the experience can be enriching, and the lessons learned can benefit both your business and your academic career. As an adjunct professor and healthcare leader, I am fortunate to embrace the pressure of doing more and continue to thrive in my multiple roles.
