Writing can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to academic writing. The fear of not knowing if what you’ve written will be well received can be overwhelming. I can attest to this as someone who has spent years writing my doctoral study. However, I have found that there are ways to overcome this fear.
Embrace the Process
One of the keys to overcoming the fear of writing is to embrace the process. Writing is not just about the end result; it’s about the journey. Take the time to enjoy the writing process, and don’t worry too much about the end result.
Find Your Voice
Another important aspect of writing is finding your voice. This is especially important when it comes to non-academic writing. Your writing should be an extension of who you are and reflect your personality and style. In real life, I make many bad jokes that make me smile, and other people enjoy my company because of my quirky humor. Yet the jury is still out.
It is important to be myself and let others enjoy my company because of the nature of my work. I am often involved in very complex or difficult conversations with staff. As I am in person, I soften my writing by not taking myself too seriously.
Write for Yourself
One of the best things about writing is that it can be a form of self-expression. Write whatever and whenever you want, without worrying about what others will think. This will help you to overcome the fear of writing and to enjoy the process.
If you’re struggling with the fear of writing, remember it’s a common feeling. Embrace the process, find your voice, and write for yourself. With time and practice, you’ll become more confident in your abilities and will be able to write without fear.
