From Idea to Action: Implementing Innovation in Your Workplace

Creativity is often considered the foundation of business innovation. Generating new and exciting ideas is often not lacking. Everyone has an idea of how we can improve the business. The problem is that the execution and implementation of those ideas are often missing. Even worse, successful strategies are implemented only to be abandoned a few months later when staff loses interest.

To sustain change within the organization and maintain a successful creative environment, I recommend following the ADKAR model developed by Prosci, which focuses on awareness, desire, knowledge, ability, and reinforcement. Below are a few strategies that have worked for me:

Awareness

To create awareness, clearly communicate the necessary change and goals. Use data to support change and share the information with your staff.

Desire

To create desire, create a sense of urgency and excitement around the change. Involve staff in the planning process to build ownership and buy-in. Make sure they understand how the change can benefit them and the organization.

Knowledge

Provide knowledge, training, and resources to help staff understand the change and their role in it. Use pilot projects to test and refine the change before rolling it widely. This will help staff understand how the change will work and what they must do to make it successful.

Ability

To ensure staff can conduct the change initiative, break the change down into manageable steps and provide support along the way. Celebrate successes and milestones to build momentum, and help staff overcome challenges.

Reinforcement

To reinforce the change, measure progress, and provide feedback to staff on how they’re doing. Use incentives and recognition to reward staff for their hard work and contributions. This will help motivate staff to continue to work towards the change and encourage them to maintain a successful creative environment.

By following these strategies, you can ensure that your innovative ideas take root and make a lasting impact within your organization. Remember that creativity is not only about generating ideas but also about implementing them successfully.
